What Is Geo-SEO?
Geo-SEO (geographic SEO) encompasses strategies to improve a website's organic visibility for searches tied to specific geographic locations. It overlaps with local SEO but extends to regional, national, and international targeting based on user location signals.
Geo-Targeting Methods
- ccTLD: Country-specific domains (example.co.uk) send strong geographic signals
- Subdirectories: example.com/uk/ — preferred by Google for international sites
- Subdomains: uk.example.com — less recommended than subdirectories
- Hreflang: Signals language and region for each page version
- Google Search Console geotargeting: Set a target country for a site or subdirectory
Local vs. Regional vs. National Geo-SEO
| Scope | Strategy |
|---|---|
| Local (city/district) | GBP, local citations, location pages |
| Regional (state/county) | Regional landing pages, localised content |
| National | ccTLD / subdirectory, national PR |
| International | Hreflang, localised content, in-country hosting |
Content Localisation
Geo-SEO requires more than a flag in the corner. Localise currency, measurements, spelling, cultural references, and examples. Translated pages must also be SEO-optimised in the target language, not just word-for-word translations.
