How to assess zero-click risk
- Connect Search Console and choose the period to analyse.
- Run the analysis — the tool compares actual CTR with the expected rate for the page’s average position.
- Review pages with strong positions but abnormally low CTR — the usual footprint of a click intercepted in the results.
- Decide per page: rewrite the snippet, change the answer format, or move the topic toward content that cannot be reduced to a paragraph.
What zero-click searches are and where they come from
A zero-click search ends without a visit: the user gets the answer inside the results page. The source can be an AI Overview, a featured snippet, a "people also ask" block, a map, a calculator or a knowledge panel.
The clearest symptom is impressions up, position steady and clicks down. That combination is what separates click loss inside the results from an ordinary ranking drop.
The risk is uneven: short informational queries with a single clear answer suffer most, while commercial, comparison and action-oriented queries suffer least.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a zero-click search?
A query where the user visits no website because the answer is already displayed in the results. For a site it means impressions without clicks.
How do I know AI Overviews are taking my clicks?
The signal is a stable position and rising impressions alongside falling CTR, specifically on informational queries. Checking the live results for those queries confirms it.
What should I do with high-risk pages?
Move the value beyond the answer: add data, examples, calculations and tools that cannot be summarised in a paragraph. The short fact will stay in the results; the reason to click must live on the page.
Should I block my content from AI answers?
Usually not: blocking removes the impressions and the brand citation too. It is more productive to reshape the page so the short answer is an entry point rather than a replacement for the visit.
