How to check an XML sitemap

  1. Enter the sitemap.xml URL — usually example.com/sitemap.xml or the link listed in robots.txt.
  2. Run the check: the tool reads the sitemap, including nested sitemap index files.
  3. Review the response code for every URL: 200, 301, 404 or 500.
  4. Remove anything that does not return 200 from the sitemap and schedule a recurring check with alerts.

Why sitemap errors hurt indexing

A sitemap is a direct signal about which pages you consider important. When it contains 404 URLs, trust in the file drops and crawlers waste budget on pages that no longer exist.

Redirects inside a sitemap are a separate problem: the file should list final canonical URLs, not intermediate ones, otherwise every crawl turns into an extra chain of hops.

Recurring monitoring beats a one-off check: most errors appear after releases, structural changes or the removal of products and articles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this an XML sitemap validator?
Partly. It parses the XML and stops if the file is broken, then checks every URL inside it: response code, redirects and robots.txt blocks. It does not validate against the sitemaps.org schema.
Where do I find my sitemap.xml?
Try example.com/sitemap.xml, or open example.com/robots.txt where the Sitemap line gives the real path. It is also listed in the Sitemaps report in Google Search Console.
Does it support sitemap index files?
Yes. If the URL you enter is a sitemap index, the tool opens every nested sitemap and checks the URLs inside each one.
How often should I check a sitemap?
Weekly for shops and media sites that change often, monthly for stable sites, and always after a migration or URL structure change.
Can I get alerts about broken URLs?
Yes. Results can be delivered to Telegram, so new 404 and 500 errors in the sitemap surface immediately instead of a month later in a search console report.
