What the internal link audit checks

The crawler walks up to 300 pages of your domain (160 by default) and records every internal link: where it starts, where it points and what the anchor says. That map is then joined with Search Console data for the chosen period.

  • Target pages are URLs with at least 50 impressions that have two inlinks or fewer, or rank at positions 4–20. That is where a few new links are most likely to move a position.
  • Donor pages are the ones with clicks, impressions and inlinks of their own. A link from such a page carries more than one from a deep section nobody visits.
  • Each donor → target pair is scored on how close the two texts are in topic and where the target ranks, and comes with a suggested anchor taken from the queries the target already shows for.
  • Weak anchors such as “here”, “read more” or “details” are flagged separately: they tell a search engine nothing about the page they point to.

How this differs from a regular crawler

A regular crawler answers “which links exist”. This audit answers “which links should be added first”. The difference is priority: Search Console separates technical noise from pages that already have search demand.

Instead of a 3,000-row table you get a short list: every opportunity has a score, an impact level (high, medium, low) and an explanation of why that pair matters more than the rest.

How to read the results

Priority opportunities. Donor → target pairs with the highest expected impact. Start here: add a link from the listed donor to the target page using the suggested anchor or a close variant.

Pages with no internal links. URLs with GSC impressions that the crawler found no links to. No internal weight reaches them. Add at least two or three links from topically related pages.

Weak anchors. Replace them with a phrase that describes the target page’s topic; the suggestion is already in the “Replace with” column.

Without GSC. Without signing in, the tool shows the link structure but cannot estimate SEO potential. Connecting Search Console is the step that makes the recommendations useful.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this internal link audit tool free?
Yes. The crawler is built in, and Search Console data comes through a free Google sign-in. No paid API, Ahrefs or Semrush is needed.
Why is the crawl limited to 300 pages?
It is a safe limit: the tool does not overload your server and returns results in reasonable time. Check large sites section by section, for example /blog/ and /products/ separately.
What is a page with no internal links?
A page the crawler found no links to from other pages of the site within the crawled scope. Search engines find it harder, and no internal weight reaches it. It is most urgent when the page already has GSC impressions.
How do I apply the recommendations quickly?
Start with the priority opportunities: the donor, target and anchor are already listed. Open the donor in your CMS, find a paragraph on a related topic and add the link. Find weak anchors by their text and replace them with a descriptive phrase.
Does it work with WordPress, Shopify or Tilda?
Yes, with any public HTTP/HTTPS site regardless of CMS. The one limit: pages that load their content with JavaScript (SPAs) may return empty HTML, so the crawler sees only the initial server response.
How is an internal link audit different from a broken link check?
A broken link check looks for 404s and redirects. An internal link audit looks for pages that lack support and tells you where to add it and with what anchor. For the first job there is a separate tool, the redirect checker.
