What is Featured Snippet Optimisation?

Featured snippet optimisation is the process of structuring content so that Google selects specific passages from your page to display as the featured snippet — the highlighted answer box that appears at position zero (above the first organic result) for many queries.

Types of Featured Snippets

TypeTriggerBest content format
Paragraph"What is X?", "Why is X?", definition queries40–60 word paragraph directly answering the question
List (numbered)"How to X", "Steps to X", process queriesNumbered list with clear steps
List (bulleted)"Types of X", "Benefits of X", collection queriesBulleted list
TableComparison queries, "X vs Y", pricingHTML table with headers

Featured Snippet Optimisation Tactics

  1. Target questions you already rank for — you can only get a featured snippet for queries where you already appear on page 1
  2. Use the question as an H2 or H3 heading — put the exact query wording as a subheading
  3. Provide a direct answer immediately below the heading — the answer should come first; elaboration can follow
  4. Keep the direct answer concise — 40–60 words for paragraph snippets; comprehensive for list and table snippets
  5. Use the right HTML structure — numbered <ol> for process queries, <ul> for collection queries, <table> for comparison queries
  6. Define terms clearly — "X is..." or "X refers to..." followed by a clear, concise definition

Featured Snippets and Click-Through

There is ongoing debate about whether featured snippets increase or decrease clicks. Research shows:

  • Branded queries + featured snippets → often reduces clicks (users get the answer without clicking)
  • Complex queries where the snippet only partially answers → often increases clicks (users want the full answer)
  • If you can't win the featured snippet → use data-nosnippet to avoid Google showing a competitor-benefiting truncated version
