Four types of mobile problems

📉 Mobile ranking — page ranks 3+ positions worse on mobile than desktop. Since 2019 Google uses mobile-first indexing: mobile version determines rankings. Causes: slow mobile speed (Core Web Vitals), mobile usability issues (Google Search Console → Mobile Usability), content/structured data rendering differently on mobile vs desktop.

📱 Mobile snippet — similar position on mobile and desktop, but mobile CTR is significantly lower. Mobile SERPs look different: more ads, a Knowledge Panel taking more space, titles truncated more aggressively. Fix: optimize the title for mobile display (first 50–55 characters are critical), add structured data for rich snippets.

🔄 Mobile conversions — lots of mobile organic sessions in GA4, but key event rate is much lower than desktop. This is a UX problem: form doesn't work on mobile, button unreachable, no mobile-friendly checkout. These are direct business losses, not strictly SEO — but you can only detect them by cross-referencing GA4 and GSC by device.

🖥️ Desktop Heavy — over 75% of clicks come from desktop. For most niches mobile accounts for 60–70%+ of traffic. A desktop skew signals a possible mobile issue: snippet doesn't appeal to mobile users, page isn't indexed properly on mobile, or the niche audience genuinely uses desktop.

Why mobile-first indexing changes SEO priorities

Before 2019, Google indexed sites using the desktop version. Today it uses mobile. This means if your mobile page is slower, has less content, or has weaker markup than desktop — it determines rankings for both versions.

The implication: a mobile/desktop position gap isn't "mobile ranks worse but desktop compensates." It means "your actual position is the mobile one." Desktop position in this case is an artifact of Google's cache or A/B testing.

Practical rule: if position_gap > 3 for high-traffic pages — an immediate mobile technical audit via GSC (Core Web Vitals + Mobile Usability) has the highest ROI of any available SEO action.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do some pages have no mobile or desktop data?
GSC only returns device-level data if a page received sufficient traffic from that device during the period. If a page is only visible on desktop, mobile data will be empty — and vice versa. This is a real scenario, not a tool error.
What to do if position_gap > 5 for a key page?
Action sequence: (1) Check GSC → Mobile Usability for specific errors on this URL. (2) Run PageSpeed Insights on mobile — compare LCP, CLS, INP with desktop. (3) Check that mobile and desktop versions have the same content (no hidden blocks with important content). (4) Check structured data in Rich Results Test for mobile.
Why is mobile CTR lower at the same position?
On mobile, the SERP screen is narrower, ads take more space, Knowledge Panels often appear above the fold. Organic results have less visible area. Titles are also truncated more aggressively — ~50 characters vs 60 on desktop. This is a normal background effect. Abnormal mobile CTR is when it's 30%+ below desktop at the same positions.
How to fix a Mobile Conversion Gap?
This is a CRO task, but SEO analysts surface it. Check: (1) do forms work on mobile (GSC automated checks don't always catch this); (2) are CTA buttons accessible without horizontal scrolling; (3) are there popups blocking main content; (4) does mobile checkout work correctly (for e-commerce). Hand the page to your CRO team with the specific GA4 numbers.
How does this differ from SERP CTR Anomalies?
SERP CTR Anomalies analyses CTR relative to position benchmarks without device breakdown. Device Performance Gap specifically compares mobile vs desktop for the same page — these are different questions. The first: "why is a page losing clicks vs expectations?" The second: "is there a specifically mobile problem?"
