How Opportunity Score works

Opportunity Score estimates how many conversions a page could generate if it converted at the site average rate. Formula: sessions × max(0, site_avg_rate − actual_rate) / 100.

Example: a page gets 5,000 organic sessions/month. Site average key event rate is 3%. Page actual rate is 0.5%. Opportunity Score = 5,000 × 2.5% = 125 potential conversions.

This answers: "how many conversions am I losing right now on this page?" Unlike SEO improvements that take months, fixing conversion issues works immediately — on traffic you already have.

How to read page categories

High traffic, low conversion. Page gets good traffic but converts at less than half the site average. Top priority. Check: does the content match search intent? Is there a clear CTA? Are key events configured in GA4 for this page?

Engaged, not converting. Users arrive and interact (engagement rate ≥ 55%) but don't convert. The audience is right — the problem is in the CTA, form, or next funnel step.

Converting. Page converts at 1.5× above site average. Use as a benchmark: copy what works here to underperforming pages.

Average. Page converts within normal range. Not a priority for conversion optimization.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Opportunity Score and how to interpret it?
Opportunity Score = sessions × (site_avg_rate − actual_rate) / 100. It estimates lost conversions: how many conversions this page would generate if it converted at the site average rate. A page with a high Opportunity Score is the top priority for CRO work.
Why do some pages show zero key event rate?
Three reasons: (1) key events are only configured on certain pages (contact form, product page); (2) the page is informational with no commercial intent; (3) the period is too short. Try 90 days and verify GA4 key event configuration.
Why is some pages' opportunity score zero even with lots of traffic?
If a page's actual key event rate equals or exceeds the site average, the gap is zero or negative — meaning no lost conversions. These pages convert well and appear in the "Converting" category instead.
What does "engaged but not converting" mean?
A page with engagement rate ≥ 55% but conversion rate below half the site average. Users stay and interact — the traffic is relevant. The problem is the next step: missing CTA, inconvenient form, lack of trust signals. These are quick wins — small changes, fast results.
How to use the top queries column?
Top queries from GSC show what audience is landing on the page. If a "Contact" page gets traffic for "seo agency pricing" — add a pricing section. If a product review gets branded queries — move the buy button above the fold. The queries tell you what the user expected; the conversion rate tells you whether you delivered it.
