How to build an SEO funnel from GSC and GA4
- Connect Google Search Console and Google Analytics 4 and choose the period.
- Build the funnel: impressions → clicks → sessions → engagement → key events.
- Find the step with the biggest drop-off — that is what limits the whole channel.
- Fix the cause at that step: the snippet for clicks, the page for sessions, the offer and form for conversions.
What each funnel step tells you
Impressions without clicks point to a visibility or snippet problem: the page is in the results but does not earn the click. Title, description and intent match are the levers.
Clicks without sessions indicate technical loss: slow loading, a redirect, a mobile error or content blocked behind an interaction.
Sessions without key events is a question of page-to-query fit and how clear the next step is. Often the traffic arrives with informational intent on a commercial page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why join GSC and GA4 in one funnel?
Search Console shows what happens before the click, GA4 what happens after. Separately each report explains half the journey, and it is easy to blame the wrong step for a conversion drop.
Why do GSC clicks not equal GA4 sessions?
That is normal. The systems count differently: time zones, blockers, bounces before the script loads, repeat clicks within one session. What matters is not equality but a stable ratio.
What is a key event in GA4?
An event you marked as business-critical: a lead, signup, purchase or call. In GA4 it replaced the term "conversion" and serves as the final funnel step.
Can I view the funnel by site section?
Yes. It helps to read the funnel by landing page group: blog, categories, landing pages. Sections convert at different rates, so a site-wide average hides the problem.
