What is SEO Competitor Research?
SEO competitor research is the systematic process of analysing the websites that rank above you (or compete for the same target keywords) to understand their organic search strategy — what content they create, which keywords they target, what their backlink profile looks like, and what technical implementations they use. The goal is to find what's working for them, identify gaps in their coverage, and uncover opportunities your site can exploit to outrank them.
Identifying Your True SEO Competitors
Your SEO competitors are not always your business competitors. A direct business competitor may have a weak online presence, while a topically adjacent site with strong domain authority may outrank you for your most important keywords. Find SEO competitors by:
- Searching for your main target keywords and seeing who consistently ranks in the top 5
- Ahrefs "Competing Domains" → shows sites with the most keyword overlap with yours
- Semrush "Organic Research" → competitor discovery feature
What to Analyse in Competitors
- Keyword gaps — which keywords do they rank for that you don't?
- Top pages — which pages drive the most of their organic traffic? What content type and format?
- Backlink profile — who links to them? What types of sites? Can you get links from the same places?
- Content strategy — how often do they publish? What topics? What depth and format?
- Technical implementation — do they use schema? How is their site structure?
