What is AI SEO?

AI SEO refers to the intersection of artificial intelligence and search engine optimisation — both how AI shapes how search engines rank pages, and how SEO professionals use AI tools to improve their work. It also encompasses optimising content to appear in AI-generated SERP features like Google's AI Overviews (formerly Search Generative Experience).

How AI Powers Google's Ranking System

SystemWhat it does
RankBrainML to interpret ambiguous or novel queries and match to relevant results
BERTNLP to understand the relationship between words in a query ("not" matters)
MUMMultimodal; understands images + text; can handle complex multi-step queries
SpamBrainAI-powered spam and link manipulation detector
Helpful ContentML classifier that rewards people-first content; penalises SEO-first content

Google AI Overviews

AI Overviews (AIO) are AI-generated answer summaries that appear at the top of Google results for certain queries. They cite sources from web pages. Early data suggests AIO can significantly reduce organic CTR for informational queries — but can also drive traffic if your site is cited.

Optimising for AI Overviews

  • Create authoritative, comprehensive content that directly answers questions
  • Strong E-E-A-T signals (especially authorship and expertise)
  • Structured, well-organised content with clear headings
  • Concise, quotable answers (paragraphs of 40–80 words)
  • High domain authority and strong backlink profile

AI Content and Google

Google's stance: AI-generated content is acceptable if it is helpful, accurate, and demonstrates E-E-A-T. Google does not penalise content for being AI-generated — it penalises content that is low-quality, misleading, or lacks genuine value, regardless of how it was produced.
