What Is E-E-A-T?

E-E-A-T stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. It is the framework Google's Search Quality Rater Guidelines use to evaluate whether content is of high quality and whether the creator and site are credible. The second "E" for Experience was added in 2022 to reflect first-hand experience with the topic.

The Four Components

  • Experience: Has the author/site demonstrated first-hand experience with the topic? (e.g., a product reviewer who actually used the product)
  • Expertise: Does the creator have the knowledge or skills for the subject matter? (formal qualifications or demonstrated practical expertise)
  • Authoritativeness: Is the site/author recognised as a go-to source in the niche? (mentions, citations, backlinks from peers)
  • Trustworthiness: Is the site safe, honest, and transparent? (HTTPS, privacy policy, editorial standards, clear authorship)

Improving E-E-A-T

  1. Publish detailed author bios with credentials and social proof
  2. Cite reputable external sources in your content
  3. Get mentioned and linked from authoritative sites in your niche
  4. Maintain clear About Us, Contact, and Privacy Policy pages
  5. Include personal experience (photos, case studies, hands-on details)
  6. Keep content accurate and regularly updated

Why E-E-A-T Matters

E-E-A-T is not a direct ranking signal — it's a quality framework used by human raters to train and validate Google's algorithms. Sites with strong E-E-A-T signals consistently perform better through algorithm updates.
