Dwell Time
Dwell time is the length of time a user spends on a page after clicking a search result before returning to the SERP. Longer dwell time suggests the content satisfied the searcher's intent.

What is Dwell Time?
Dwell time is the amount of time a visitor spends on a page after clicking a search result and before returning to the search results page (SERP). It differs from bounce rate (which only measures whether a user leaves) and session duration (which includes all pages in a visit).
Dwell Time vs Related Metrics
| Metric | What it measures |
|---|---|
| Dwell time | Time between clicking a SERP result and returning to the SERP |
| Time on page | Time spent on a specific page (Google Analytics) |
| Session duration | Total time across all pages in a single visit |
| Bounce rate | Whether the user left without interacting |
Is Dwell Time a Ranking Factor?
Google has not confirmed dwell time as a direct ranking factor, and they cannot easily measure it without browser data. However, Bing has confirmed using dwell time as a ranking signal. Many SEO experts believe Google uses related signals (pogo-sticking, long clicks vs short clicks) to infer content quality.
How to Increase Dwell Time
- Match search intent perfectly — the most important factor; if the content doesn't answer the query, users leave immediately
- Strong opening paragraph — grab attention in the first 100 words; don't bury the answer
- Multimedia — images, videos, and interactive elements keep users engaged longer
- Table of contents — helps users navigate to what they need within the page
- Page speed — a fast-loading page prevents abandonment before reading starts
- Readable formatting — short paragraphs, H2/H3 structure, bullet points
