What is Search Volume?

Search volume is the average number of times a specific keyword or phrase is entered into a search engine per month, typically measured for a specific country and search engine (usually Google). It is one of the most fundamental metrics in keyword research — helping SEOs and content strategists prioritise which keywords are worth targeting based on their traffic potential.

How Search Volume is Measured

Search volume figures come from several sources:

  • Google Keyword Planner — the most authoritative source; shows ranges rather than exact numbers for low-volume keywords; data is intended for advertisers
  • Third-party tools (Ahrefs, Semrush, Moz) — use proprietary models combining clickstream data, Google Keyword Planner data, and their own estimates; numbers differ between tools
  • Google Search Console — shows actual impressions for your site's keywords (not overall search volume)

How to Interpret Search Volume

Volume rangeClassificationCharacteristics
100,000+Head termVery competitive; requires high authority to rank
10,000–100,000Mid-tailCompetitive; strong content and links needed
1,000–10,000Mid-tail to long-tailAchievable with good content; often high intent
100–1,000Long-tailLess traffic but often high intent and conversion
Under 100Micro-niche / very long-tailVery specific; niche but often highly qualified traffic

Search Volume Limitations

  • Search volume is an average — actual monthly searches vary significantly by season and current events
  • Volume ≠ traffic — traffic depends on SERP competition, CTR, and how many SERP features take clicks before organic results
  • Low-volume ≠ low-value — a 50-search/month keyword with high commercial intent and easy ranking can outperform a 50,000-volume keyword you can't rank for
