Bounce Rate and SEO
Bounce rate measures the percentage of sessions in which the user leaves a site after viewing only one page without any interaction. While Google has stated that bounce rate is not a direct ranking factor, a high bounce rate often signals content relevance or user experience problems that do affect rankings indirectly.
GA4 vs. Universal Analytics
In Google Analytics 4, the equivalent metric is Engagement Rate — the percentage of sessions that are "engaged" (lasting 10+ seconds, with a conversion, or with 2+ page views). Bounce rate in GA4 is 100% minus the engagement rate.
Why Bounce Rate Matters for SEO
- High bounce rate on a landing page may indicate poor keyword-content alignment
- Users who bounce quickly may click back to the SERP (pogo-sticking), signalling low satisfaction
- Content that satisfies intent (even in a single visit) may have a naturally high bounce rate — context matters
Reducing Unwanted Bounce
- Match content to the keyword's search intent precisely
- Improve page load speed (every second of delay increases bounce)
- Use clear, compelling above-the-fold content
- Add internal links to related pages to encourage exploration
- Remove intrusive popups or interstitials on entry
