What is Semantic SEO?

Semantic SEO is an advanced optimisation approach that focuses on the meaning, context, and relationships between concepts rather than targeting isolated keywords. It aligns with how modern search engines like Google (powered by BERT, MUM, and entity-based understanding) interpret queries — not just matching words but understanding the intent and topic behind them.

The Shift from Keywords to Entities

Traditional SEO optimised pages for specific keyword strings: "best Italian restaurant London". Semantic SEO recognises that Google understands entities (named things with properties and relationships) and concepts, not just word patterns. A page about "pizza" that also mentions ingredients, chefs, Italy, cuisine, and dining without keyword stuffing will be understood as deeply relevant to the topic.

Semantic SEO Techniques

  1. Entity optimisation — ensure your content mentions all key entities related to the topic (people, places, products, concepts)
  2. LSI keywords and semantic variations — use synonyms and related terms naturally (Google understands that "automobile" = "car")
  3. Comprehensive topic coverage — cover all subtopics and questions a user might have about a subject
  4. Knowledge Graph alignment — structure content to match how Google's Knowledge Graph represents the topic
  5. Structured data — use Schema.org to explicitly label entities in your content
  6. Content depth — surface-level content signals low entity relevance; in-depth coverage signals expertise
