What is Bounce Rate?
Bounce rate is the percentage of sessions in which a user views only one page on a website and then leaves without triggering any other request to the analytics server. A "bounce" means the user arrived, didn't interact, and left.
Bounce Rate in GA4 vs Universal Analytics
| Universal Analytics | GA4 | |
|---|---|---|
| Definition | Single-page sessions with no interaction | Sessions lasting under 10 seconds with no engagement event |
| Primary metric | Bounce rate | Engagement rate (inverse) |
| Reading a blog post | Counted as a bounce | May count as engaged if user spends 10+ seconds |
In GA4, engagement rate = % of sessions that lasted 10+ seconds, had 1+ conversion event, or had 2+ page views. Bounce rate = 1 − engagement rate.
Is Bounce Rate a Google Ranking Factor?
Google has stated that bounce rate data from Google Analytics is not used as a ranking signal. However, a high bounce rate often correlates with poor content quality, slow load times, or misaligned search intent — all of which indirectly affect rankings. Fix the root cause, not the metric.
How to Reduce Bounce Rate
- Match search intent — ensure your page delivers what the query promises
- Improve page speed — slow pages cause visitors to leave immediately
- Add clear calls-to-action — guide users to next steps
- Improve readability — short paragraphs, clear headings, no walls of text
- Internal links — link to related content to encourage deeper browsing
