What are SEO KPIs?

SEO KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) are the specific, measurable metrics used to evaluate the effectiveness of SEO efforts and progress toward business goals. Without defined KPIs, it's impossible to objectively assess whether SEO work is generating value or which activities are worth continuing.

Leading vs Lagging KPIs

  • Lagging indicators (outcomes) — organic revenue, conversions, keyword rankings. These take months to change and reflect past effort.
  • Leading indicators (inputs) — content published, backlinks acquired, technical issues fixed, pages optimised. These predict future performance and are within your direct control.

Track both: leading indicators tell you if your work is on track; lagging indicators confirm results.

Setting SEO KPI Targets

  • Benchmark current performance before setting targets
  • Use 3-month and 12-month targets (SEO is slow)
  • Compare YoY (year-over-year) to remove seasonality effects
  • Set targets by traffic segment (branded vs non-branded organic)
