What Are SEO KPIs?
SEO KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) are quantifiable metrics that track whether your SEO efforts are achieving their intended goals. The right KPIs align with business outcomes — not just vanity metrics like raw rankings — and vary depending on site type and objectives.
Tier 1: Business KPIs
- Organic revenue / conversions: Direct business impact of organic traffic
- Organic lead volume: Leads sourced from organic search
- Organic share of voice: Your brand's visibility vs. competitors across target keywords
Tier 2: Channel KPIs
- Organic sessions: Total visits from unpaid search
- Organic users: Unique visitors from search
- Organic CTR: Clicks ÷ impressions (from GSC)
- Average position: Mean ranking across tracked keywords
Tier 3: SEO Activity KPIs
- Pages indexed vs. total published
- Core Web Vitals pass rate
- New referring domains per month
- Crawl errors resolved
Setting Targets
Base targets on historical trends and industry benchmarks. A new site might target 20% month-over-month organic growth; a mature site might aim for 10% year-over-year. Always set timeframes — SEO results are not immediate.
