What is SEO Forecasting?

SEO forecasting is the practice of estimating the expected business impact (traffic, leads, revenue) of SEO efforts based on historical data, keyword search volumes, estimated click-through rates by position, and site conversion rates. It allows SEO teams to justify investment, set realistic expectations, and prioritise work by predicted ROI.

Basic SEO Traffic Forecasting Formula

Forecasted Traffic = Search Volume × Expected CTR × (1 - current ranking adjustment)

Example:
Keyword: "seo tools" — 40,000 monthly searches
Target position: #2 — estimated CTR: 15%
Forecasted monthly clicks: 40,000 × 0.15 = 6,000 visits

  2. Estimate target positions — based on current rankings, domain authority, and realistic improvement timeline
  3. Apply CTR by position — use benchmark data or your own GSC CTR data
  4. Estimate conversion rate — what % of traffic converts?
  5. Calculate revenue impact — conversions × average order value
