Link Equity & PageRank
⚖️
Alex explains PageRank
"Imagine: every page on the internet is a voter. A link = a vote. But a vote from a page with 1000 links to it is worth more than a vote from a page with one link. That's PageRank."
📌 Link Equity — the value passed from one page to another via a link. The foundation of the PageRank algorithm.
How Link Equity Transfer Works
- Every page has a certain PageRank value
- By linking to another page, it passes a portion of its value
- More links on a page = less equity per outgoing link
- rel="nofollow" / rel="sponsored" — equity not passed
What Affects Link Value
| Factor | Impact |
|---|---|
| Donor authority (DR/DA) | Higher = more valuable link |
| Topical relevance | Links from relevant sites are worth more |
| Position on the page | In-content > sidebar > footer |
| Number of links on the page | Fewer links = more equity per link |
Link value formula:
Value = Donor Authority × Relevance × (1 / outgoing links count)
Value = Donor Authority × Relevance × (1 / outgoing links count)
🎯 Takeaway: one link from a DR 80 topical site beats 100 links from DR 10 irrelevant directories.
🎮 Test yourself: what happens to equity when a page has multiple outgoing links?
