Masha choosing from ten results
"All the titles look about the same. I read the description under the link. This one! 'Step-by-step guide + free template' โ I'm clicking this."
๐ Meta description โ an HTML tag whose content Google shows below the title in search results. It doesn't directly affect rankings, but strongly influences CTR โ and therefore real traffic.
Anatomy of a Good Meta Description
<meta name="description" content="Technical SEO from scratch: crawler, sitemap, canonical, CWV. Step-by-step guide with checklist. Read free โ">
| Element | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| 150โ160 characters | Won't get cut off in desktop results |
| Keyword included | Google bolds it โ catches the eye |
| Specific benefit | What the user gets by clicking |
| Call to action | "Read", "Download", "Try" |
When Does Google Replace Your Description?
Google may automatically replace your meta description with another excerpt from the page if it considers it more relevant to the user's query. This is normal โ but a good description gets used more often.
โ ๏ธ Common mistake: identical meta description on all pages, or auto-generated from the first paragraph. Google flags this as an issue in GSC โ Search Appearance.

Meta description A/B test
"Version A: 'Learn about technical SEO'. Version B: 'Technical SEO: 20-point checklist + video. Get up to speed in 30 min โ'. CTR went from 1.8% to 4.2%. Traffic grew 2.3x."
๐ฏ Strategy: think of the meta description as an ad. Your position in the results is the ad placement. The description is what makes people click.
๐ฎ Test yourself: does the meta description improve position or CTR?
