Manual Penalties & Recovery

๐Ÿšจ
Alex sees the red banner
"A notification appeared in GSC: 'Unnatural links detected pointing to your site.' Traffic dropped 80%. This is a manual action โ€” a real Google employee found the violation and applied the penalty by hand."
๐Ÿ“Œ Manual action โ€” a penalty applied by a real Google Quality Team employee, not an algorithm. Visible in GSC โ†’ Security & Manual Actions.

Common Reasons for Manual Actions

  • Unnatural links โ€” purchased, swapped, or spammy links
  • Thin content โ€” pages with no real value, doorway pages
  • Cloaking โ€” showing different content to users vs. Googlebot
  • Hidden text โ€” keywords in white font on white background
  • Hacked site โ€” spam or malicious code injected by attackers

Manual Penalty Removal Process

  1. Read the violation description in GSC
  2. Fix all violations (remove links / content)
  3. If links โ€” upload a Disavow file
  4. Submit a Reconsideration Request
  5. Wait for a response (usually 2โ€“4 weeks)

Algorithm (Penguin, Helpful Content) โ†’ fix and wait for recrawl
Manual action โ†’ you need a Reconsideration Request
๐ŸŽฏ Important: Google notifies you of manual actions via GSC. Set up notifications so you don't miss them.
๐ŸŽฎ Test yourself: where do you find out about a Google manual penalty?
