Diagnosing Traffic Drops
๐
Alex opens GSC on Monday morning
"Traffic dropped 40% over the weekend. The client is in a panic. Rule #1 โ don't panic and don't make sudden changes. Diagnose first, treat second."
๐ Diagnosing traffic drops โ a systematic process for finding the cause of an organic traffic decline. The cause is usually one of four: an algorithm change, a technical issue, a content/structure change, or competitor action.
Step 1 โ Identify Scale and Date
In Google Search Console โ Performance: compare the "before" and "after" periods. In GA4 โ Reports โ Acquisition: check the organic channel. Lock down the exact drop start date.
Step 2 โ Check Algorithm Updates
Cross-reference the date with the Google ranking updates changelog and Semrush Sensor / MozCast. If an update coincides โ that signals a content or E-E-A-T audit is needed.
Step 3 โ Segment Pages
| Question | What it means |
|---|---|
| Entire site dropped? | Technical issue or major broad core update |
| Only certain categories? | Topical algorithm change or competitors improved |
| Only branded queries? | Reputation issue or brand name changed |
| Traffic same, conversions dropped? | Site/offer problem, not an SEO issue |
Step 4 โ Technical Check
- GSC โ Coverage: any new indexation errors?
- Was the site accidentally blocked via robots.txt or noindex?
- Any redirect chains or mass 404 errors?
- Did URL structure change without redirects?

Alex finds the cause
"A developer blocked /blog/ in robots.txt during a deploy โ 'temporarily, for testing'. Forgot to revert it. In 3 days Google dropped 80 pages from the index. Rolled back the file โ traffic recovered in 2 weeks."
Diagnosis checklist:
โ Drop start date identified
โ Algorithm updates cross-referenced
โ Drop segmented (whole site / section / queries)
โ Technical factors checked (robots, noindex, 404s)
โ Content compared with top-10 competitors
โ Root cause hypothesis formed

๐ฏ Rule: never make large-scale content changes during diagnosis. One change at a time โ otherwise you won't know what helped.
๐ฎ Test yourself: put the diagnosis steps in the correct order!
