What Is Position Zero?

Position zero refers to the featured snippet that appears above the first organic search result. It displays a block of content — a paragraph, list, or table — extracted from a web page, often alongside the page title and URL. Achieving position zero can dramatically increase click-through rate for certain queries.

Types of Featured Snippets

  • Paragraph: A 40–60 word definition or answer (most common)
  • List: Ordered steps or unordered items extracted from a page
  • Table: Comparison data or structured information
  • Video: YouTube video with a timestamp highlighted

How to Optimise for Position Zero

  1. Identify queries already triggering featured snippets (use Ahrefs/Semrush)
  2. Target queries where you already rank in top 5 — snippet selection is typically from this range
  3. Write a clear, concise answer (40–50 words for paragraph) directly after the H2 question heading
  4. Use numbered lists for step-by-step processes; bullet lists for items
  5. Add a summary table for comparison queries

Does It Always Increase Traffic?

Not always. For some queries, the snippet provides the complete answer and users don't click (zero-click). For queries requiring deeper reading, position zero significantly boosts clicks. Test whether snippet pages see a CTR improvement after winning the snippet.
