What Is Crawl Depth?
Crawl depth (also called click depth) is the number of clicks required to navigate from the homepage to a given page. Pages closer to the homepage (lower crawl depth) are generally crawled more frequently and indexed faster. Deep pages (many clicks from the homepage) may be crawled less often or missed entirely.
Crawl Depth and SEO
- Pages at click depth 1–3 are crawled most frequently
- Pages beyond click depth 5 may be overlooked, especially on large sites
- High-priority content should be reachable within 3 clicks
- Crawl depth affects how quickly new content is discovered by Googlebot
Reducing Crawl Depth
- Flatten site architecture — avoid deeply nested subcategories
- Add important pages to the main navigation
- Include key pages in the XML sitemap
- Link to important deep pages from the homepage or high-authority pages
- Build content hubs where the hub page links to all sub-pages
Auditing Crawl Depth
Screaming Frog SEO Spider reports crawl depth for every discovered URL. Export the data and filter for pages with crawl depth > 4. Prioritise surfacing your most important pages higher in the architecture.
Technical decision
| Correct use | Crawl depth is a crawler-derived graph measurement and varies with its start URL, link rules and rendered-content settings. |
|---|---|
| Validation | Record crawler configuration, compare depth with server-log discovery, and inspect valuable deep URLs for missing hub or contextual links. |
