What are Orphan Pages?

Orphan pages are pages on a website with zero internal links pointing to them from other pages on the same site. Without any internal links, these pages exist in isolation — neither users nor crawlers following links can find them organically.

Why Orphan Pages Are an SEO Problem

  • Poor crawl accessibility — Googlebot may never crawl them or only finds them via XML sitemap
  • No link equity — receive zero internal PageRank
  • Indexation risk — uncrawled pages can't be indexed
  • Poor user experience — important pages users can't find through navigation

How to Find and Fix Orphan Pages

  1. Find orphans: Full site crawl (Screaming Frog) + export XML sitemap URLs. URLs in sitemap but NOT found during crawl = orphan pages.
  2. Evaluate each: worth keeping → add internal links; outdated → 301 redirect or 410; campaign page → add to sitemap
  3. Prevent future orphans: include internal linking in your publishing process
