SEO Term Definition
Click Depth
Click depth (also called page depth) is the number of clicks required to reach a page from the homepage. Pages with lower click depth are crawled more frequently and receive more PageRank from the homepage.

What is Click Depth?
Click depth (also called page depth or crawl depth) is the minimum number of clicks a user (or crawler) must make from the homepage to reach a specific page. A page accessible in one click from the homepage has a depth of 1; a page five clicks away has a depth of 5.
Why Click Depth Matters for SEO
- Crawl frequency — Google crawls shallow pages more often. Pages buried 5+ clicks deep may be crawled rarely or not at all on large sites.
- PageRank distribution — PageRank flows through links. Each link dilutes the PageRank passed; pages further from the homepage naturally accumulate less authority.
- Crawl budget efficiency — shallow site architecture means Googlebot can discover and index more pages within the same crawl budget.
Recommended Click Depth Guidelines
| Page type | Recommended max depth |
|---|---|
| Homepage | 0 |
| Top-level categories | 1 |
| Subcategories / sections | 2 |
| Individual content pages / products | 3 |
| Archive pages, tags, paginated results | 4+ |
How to Reduce Click Depth
- Improve site architecture — flatten the hierarchy so fewer click levels exist between the homepage and content pages
- Add links from high-authority pages — link from the homepage, pillar pages, or navigation to deep but important pages
- Use HTML sitemaps — a user-facing sitemap page linked from the homepage creates a direct path to every page
- Update internal links in popular content — add links to deep pages from your top-traffic articles
- Submit XML sitemap — helps Googlebot discover deep pages even if click depth is high
Technical decision
| Correct use | Click depth describes the shortest navigational path from a chosen start page, not an absolute ranking rule or universal three-click limit. |
|---|---|
| Validation | Crawl from the home page, segment depth by template and importance, then shorten paths only where navigation becomes clearer for users. |
