What is a Topical Map?

A topical map is a strategic planning document (spreadsheet or visual diagram) mapping out all topics, subtopics, and content pieces a website needs to achieve comprehensive topical authority. It is the blueprint for a content cluster strategy.

How to Build a Topical Map

  1. Define your niche — what is the core topic?
  2. Identify core topics — 5–10 main subtopics
  3. Expand each core topic — all questions and subtopics for comprehensive coverage
  4. Map keyword data — volumes and search intent per topic node
  5. Design content hierarchy — pillar page at top, supporting cluster pages below
  6. Plan internal links — how pieces connect to each other
  7. Prioritise — sequence by search volume, competition, and strategic importance
