Passage Indexing (Passage Ranking)

Passage indexing (officially "passage ranking") is a Google feature that allows specific passages within a long page to rank in search results independently — so a page can rank for a specific query even if the query only matches one small section.

What is Passage Indexing?

Passage indexing (Google calls it passage ranking) is a Google feature announced in October 2020 that enables Google to rank specific passages or sections within a long-form page independently of the overall page topic. This allows a single comprehensive page covering many subtopics to rank for queries that match only one specific section of the page, even if the page's overall topic doesn't align perfectly with that query.

How Passage Ranking Works

Google processes the full content of a page and identifies specific passages that directly answer a search query. If a passage within your page is the best answer to a specific query, Google can surface that page (and highlight that passage) in search results — even if the page as a whole is about a broader topic.

What Passage Ranking Means for SEO

  • Long-form, comprehensive content benefits most — pages covering many related subtopics can rank for dozens of specific queries
  • Clear, well-structured sections — use H2/H3 headings to define clear passages; Google can identify these as distinct sections
  • Answer specific questions within broader pages — don't create a separate page for every micro-question; a well-structured section on a comprehensive page can rank
  • On-page optimisation still matters — the page must be crawlable and high-quality overall
