What Is Passage Ranking?
Passage ranking (announced by Google in 2020) is a capability that allows Google to identify and rank individual sections (passages) of a web page for specific queries. A long, multi-topic article might rank for a niche query even if the page as a whole is not specifically about that topic.
How It Works
Google uses its language understanding models to identify relevant passages within a document and independently assess their relevance to a query. The page itself doesn't have to be the best match — a particular paragraph might be the best answer.
SEO Implications
- Long, comprehensive pages benefit because buried sections can now rank independently
- Good heading structure helps Google identify passage boundaries
- Clear, self-contained paragraphs improve the chance of a passage being selected
- Passage ranking is a ranking signal, not a separate index
Optimisation Tips
- Structure content with clear H2 and H3 headings that signal topic shifts
- Write concise, self-contained paragraphs that answer a specific question
- Avoid burying key answers too deep in large walls of text
- Monitor which queries trigger impressions for unexpected long-form pages
