What Is Internal PageRank Distribution?

Internal PageRank distribution describes how link equity (authority) flows through a website via internal links. Pages that receive more internal links — especially from high-authority pages — accumulate more PageRank and tend to rank better in search results.

How Internal Links Pass Authority

  • Each internal link passes a portion of the linking page's PageRank to the destination
  • PageRank is divided equally among all outgoing links on a page
  • Pages with many incoming internal links accumulate more authority
  • Nofollow attributes on internal links stop PageRank flow

Optimising Internal PageRank Flow

  1. Link from high-traffic and high-authority pages to pages you want to rank
  2. Reduce unnecessary internal links on high-value pages (keep outlinks focused)
  3. Fix orphan pages — pages with no internal links receive no PageRank
  4. Use descriptive, keyword-rich anchor text for internal links
  5. Build topic clusters to concentrate authority around pillar pages

Auditing Internal Link Equity

Use tools like Screaming Frog, Ahrefs, or Sitebulb to visualise your internal link graph. Identify pages with disproportionately low internal authority relative to their importance to your business.
