What is International SEO?

International SEO is the set of strategies and technical implementations that help a website appear in search results for the right country and language combinations. It involves signalling to Google which pages are intended for which national or language audiences, and ensuring users see the version of a site most relevant to them.

Key Technical Components

1. URL Structure Options

StructureExampleProsCons
ccTLDexample.de, example.frStrongest geo-signal; separate domainsExpensive; separate authority per domain
Subdomainde.example.comEasy to set up; can geo-target in GSCAuthority less consolidated than subfolders
Subfolderexample.com/de/Consolidates domain authority; preferred by most SEOsServer complexity; less clear geo-signal

2. Hreflang Implementation

hreflang tags tell Google which language/country version of a page to show for which user. Proper implementation requires:

  • Every hreflang set must include a self-referencing hreflang on each page
  • All hreflang annotations must be reciprocal (if EN links to DE, DE must link back to EN)
  • Use ISO 639-1 language codes + ISO 3166-1 Alpha 2 country codes: en-gb, de-de, fr-fr
  • Use x-default for the fallback version shown when no better match exists

3. Content Localisation (vs Translation)

True localisation is more than translation:

  • Adapt currency, date formats, measurement units
  • Use local idioms and cultural references
  • Use local business examples and case studies
  • Adapt pricing and offerings for local market conditions

4. GSC Geo-Targeting

For subfolders and subdomains (not ccTLDs, which are automatically associated with their country), set the target country in GSC: Search Console → Settings → International Targeting.

Technical decision

Correct useCreate a locale only when it offers genuinely localized content and a stable URL; automatic redirects by guessed language can obstruct crawling.
ValidationVerify reciprocal hreflang, self-canonical, status and language content for every variant, including x-default where it represents the selector.
