What is Mobile SEO?
Mobile SEO is the practice of ensuring a website delivers an excellent experience on smartphones and tablets, and performs well in mobile search results. Since 2019, Google uses mobile-first indexing for all sites, meaning the mobile version of a website is the primary version Google uses for indexing and ranking — even for desktop queries.
Mobile-First Indexing: What It Means
- If your site's mobile version has less content than the desktop version, Google only sees and indexes the mobile content
- If your mobile site doesn't exist (desktop-only), Google still crawls the desktop version using a mobile user-agent — but may not rank it well for mobile users
- Responsive design (same URL, same content, adapts via CSS) is Google's recommended implementation — the simplest approach for mobile-first indexing
Mobile SEO Checklist
- Responsive design — pages work correctly on all screen sizes
- Viewport meta tag —
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1"> - Text readability — minimum 16px base font size; sufficient contrast
- Tap target size — buttons and links at least 48x48px with adequate spacing
- No intrusive interstitials — full-screen pop-ups that block content immediately on mobile are penalised by Google
- Core Web Vitals for mobile — LCP, INP, CLS measured on mobile; often worse than desktop
- No horizontal scrolling — content should not overflow viewport width
- Fast loading on mobile networks — test on simulated 3G/4G connections
Testing Mobile-Friendliness
- Google's Mobile-Friendly Test (search.google.com/test/mobile-friendly)
- GSC Mobile Usability report — shows mobile-specific issues across the full site
- PageSpeed Insights — mobile performance and Core Web Vitals
- Chrome DevTools device emulation — for detailed CSS/layout debugging
