Keyword Intent

Keyword intent (or search intent) classifies what a user is looking to do when they type a query: find information (informational), locate a specific website (navigational), compare before buying (commercial), or buy now (transactional).

What is Keyword Intent?

Keyword intent (also called search intent or query intent) is the underlying goal or purpose behind a search query. Understanding intent is fundamental to creating content that satisfies users and ranks well — because Google's primary goal is to match search results to what the user actually wants to accomplish.

The Four Types of Search Intent

Intent typeUser goalExample queriesBest content type
InformationalLearn something"what is SEO", "how does photosynthesis work"Blog posts, guides, how-tos, definitions
NavigationalFind a specific site"Twitter login", "Ahrefs blog"Brand page or specific destination page
Commercial investigationResearch before buying"best SEO tools 2025", "Ahrefs vs Semrush"Comparison pages, reviews, best-of lists
TransactionalTake an action (often buy)"buy Ahrefs", "download free SEO tool"Product/pricing pages, landing pages

How to Determine the Intent of a Keyword

The most reliable method is to analyse the SERP:

  • What types of pages appear in the top 5 results? (blog posts, product pages, videos, tools)
  • What format do they use? (listicles, how-tos, definitions, comparisons)
  • What angle do the top results take? (beginner-focused, expert-level, free options)

The SERP tells you what Google believes users want — match it.

Intent Mismatch: The Most Common SEO Mistake

Creating a product page for an informational query (or a blog post for a transactional query) is an intent mismatch — and it will almost certainly fail to rank. Before creating content, always check what type of page dominates the SERP for your target keyword.

Editorial decision

Infer the task from results and language, then confirm it with actual query-to-page behavior.

Validation

Check dominant result type, modifiers, funnel stage and GSC landing pages on representative live pages and record the result.
