AI tools for GA4 and Search Console: four layers and which question each answers

Tools sold as AI for GA4 and Search Console mix four different layers that measure different things. This guide separates them, sets out what Google’s own AI features document, and shows how to join the numbers by page without adding them up.

Four layers hide behind “AI tools for GA4 and Search Console”

Tools sold under this label mix four different things: AI built into Google’s own products, assistants that query your data, trackers that sample AI answers, and AI visits counted in Analytics. They measure different quantities, so the first job is to separate the layers, not to rank the logos.

Layer 1: what Google already gives you

  • Generative AI performance report. It shows impressions only, not clicks or position, for AI Overviews and AI Mode, with Pages, Countries, Dates and Devices but no Queries dimension (report help). The chart aggregates by property; a URL filter switches it to URL aggregation. It may not appear for sites with too few impressions.
  • Clicks from AI features are not in that report. Google says appearances in AI features are included in overall search traffic and reported under the Web search type (AI features and your website).
  • AI-powered configuration turns a typed request into filters, comparisons and metric selections in the Performance report. It is limited to 20 requests per user per day, shown to a small share of users, cannot sort or export, and Google says to always review the filters it applies (filtering help).
  • GA4 insights. Automated insights flag unusual changes; custom insights use conditions you set, up to 50 per property, with optional email alerts (insights help).
  • Ask Advisor (beta). A Gemini-based conversational assistant in Analytics, available if your account is eligible and the property language is English, working only from that property’s data, and with a warning that it may make mistakes (Ask Advisor help).

Layers 2–4: assistants, trackers and AI visits

Assistants over your own data query Search Console and GA4 through a connector. Judge them with the four questions in how to choose an SEO MCP server. Answer-presence trackers run prompts you choose on a schedule and parse brand mentions from the answers; by construction that is a sample of prompts, not a count of real users. AI visits in GA4 are sessions whose source you identify yourself; test your filter with your own visit before trusting it.

We did not verify any third-party tracker against its own documentation, so we name no products here. Ask each vendor for the same things: which layer it covers, whether the data is live or sampled, whether results join to a page, and what the full configuration costs for your site count.

Three numbers that must not be added

NumberSourceWhat it counts
AI-feature impressionsSearch Consoletimes your links were shown, measured by Google, impressions only
Mentions and citationsA trackerappearances in a sample of prompts you chose
AI-referred sessionsGA4visits that arrived with a source you classified as AI

Put them side by side in one report with their labels, never in one total.

Join them by page, not by total

Illustrative example (invented numbers): a guide page has 5,000 AI-feature impressions in a month, the tracker shows it cited in 6 of 40 prompts, and GA4 records 35 AI-referred sessions. Read it as a chain: shown, cited, visited. A page with many impressions and few visits is a candidate for a stronger snippet-worthy opening; a page cited often with no visits may be answered fully in the AI text. Check each against the page, since these three figures cannot prove why.
