Measure AI Overviews on branded queries
Search Console can show how your brand clicks moved and which pages appear in AI Overviews, but it cannot tell you whether an overview shows on a given brand search. This playbook maps the three questions, uses the Branded filter and the new report, and adds a sampling rule with the arithmetic for how many queries to check.

Three questions, three different tools
“Are AI Overviews hurting my brand searches?” is really three questions. Search Console answers one of them well, a second partly, and the third not at all. Mixing them up is how people end up with a confident chart that measures the wrong thing.
| Question | What answers it | What it cannot tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Did clicks and CTR on my brand queries change? | Performance report with the Branded filter | why they changed |
| Are my pages shown in AI Overviews and AI Mode? | Generative AI performance report | clicks, or which queries triggered it |
| Does an AI Overview appear on my brand search, and what does it say? | Your own sampling of the results page | Search Console does not report it |
Step 1: measure brand traffic with the Branded filter
In the Performance report, add the Branded filter to see impressions, clicks, CTR and position for brand queries only (branded queries filter). Google classifies queries with an AI-assisted system, not keywords, so a few queries may be misplaced, and the filter exists only for top-level properties with enough volume, not for URL-path or subdomain properties.
Compare two equal periods with weekdays matched and set a noise band from your own weekly variation, as in the validation playbook. A change that stays inside the band is not a finding.
Step 2: read the Generative AI performance report
This report shows impressions of your pages in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, date and device (Generative AI performance report). Three limits matter for a brand question:
- It reports impressions only, not clicks.
- It has no query dimension, so you cannot isolate brand queries inside it.
- It is hidden when your site has too few such impressions or has excluded itself from these features, and its table stops at 1,000 rows.
Use it to see which pages are shown and whether the volume is growing, not to prove an effect on brand clicks.
Step 3: sample the results yourself
- Build the list. Export your top brand queries from the Branded filter.
- Fix the conditions. Same country, device and language, signed out, at a set time each week.
- Record four things per query: is an AI Overview shown, is it above the results, which sources it cites, and whether what it says about you is correct.
- Annotate the run so a later change has a date.
Sample size decides how much a share can be trusted. For a share near 50 percent, the 95 percent margin is 1.96 × √(0.25 ÷ n).
| Queries sampled | Margin of the share |
|---|---|
| 20 | about ±22 points |
| 50 | about ±14 points |
| 100 | about ±10 points |
With 20 queries, a move from 60 to 70 percent is noise. Use at least 50 queries, and compare like with like from week to week. For context, Ahrefs reports AI Overviews on about 83 percent of branded keywords in US desktop results in September 2026 (its study); that comes from its own crawl and is not a number to expect in your sample.
Step 4: read the three together
| What you see | Likely reading |
|---|---|
| Brand clicks down beyond the noise band, AI Overviews on most sampled brand queries | consistent with an effect, not proof; check seasonality and updates first |
| Brand clicks down, AI Overviews rare in your sample | look elsewhere: demand, ranking, snippets |
| Brand clicks steady, AI impressions rising | your pages are cited without visible loss |
| The overview says something wrong about you | fix your own pages and sources first, then recheck the sample |
What Google says to do
Google states that there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode and no special optimizations, and that the existing SEO fundamentals still apply. A page must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet (AI features and your website). So the useful work is the ordinary work: keep important pages indexable, accurate and clear. Snippet controls such as nosnippet limit what is shown, which also limits how you can appear.
AI Overviews on brand searches, answered
Can Search Console show me AI Overviews on my brand queries?
Not directly. The generative AI report has no query dimension and reports impressions only.
Is the Branded filter exact?
No. Google says some queries may be misidentified, and it is available only for top-level properties with enough volume.
Do I need to optimize for AI Overviews?
Google says no special optimization is necessary; keep pages indexable and eligible for a snippet.
