Thin Affiliate Content

Thin affiliate content refers to affiliate websites that add little or no original value — typically just aggregating product information from retailers with copied descriptions — which Google actively penalises.

What is Thin Affiliate Content?

Thin affiliate content refers to websites or pages that participate in affiliate programmes but provide minimal or no added value beyond what the affiliated retailer or service already provides. Typical characteristics:

  • Product descriptions copied directly from retailer product feeds or manufacturer specs
  • No original reviews, comparisons, or user experience
  • No additional information that couldn't be found on the product page itself
  • Thin pages with just a few sentences, an affiliate link, and nothing else

Why Google Targets Thin Affiliate Sites

Google's quality guidelines explicitly address affiliate sites as a quality concern. From Google's perspective, thin affiliate pages are "doorway pages" — they exist purely to redirect users to another destination for commercial gain, adding no value to the user's journey. Google's helpful content system and manual review processes specifically look for this pattern.

How to Build a Quality Affiliate Site

The core principle: add genuine value that the linked-to product page doesn't provide.

  1. Write original, first-hand reviews — actually use or test the products you review
  2. Add unique comparisons — compare products across dimensions that matter to buyers
  3. Provide buyer's guides — help users understand what to look for before purchasing
  4. Include real user data — aggregated community opinions, long-term ownership reports
  5. Address specific use cases — "best running shoes for flat feet", not just "best running shoes"
  6. Disclose affiliate relationships — FTC compliance and trust signal simultaneously
