What Is SEO A/B Testing?

SEO A/B testing (also called SEO split testing) is the practice of making changes to a subset of pages and comparing organic performance against a control group. Unlike CRO A/B tests that measure user behaviour, SEO tests measure changes in rankings and organic traffic.

SEO Testing Methodology

  1. Select pages: Group similar pages (e.g., product category pages)
  2. Split into control and variant: Randomly assign pages to each group
  3. Apply the change: Modify only the variant group
  4. Wait: Allow Googlebot to re-crawl (typically 4–8 weeks)
  5. Measure: Compare organic sessions and impressions between groups

Common Elements to Test

  • Title tag formulas (with vs. without brand, different keyword positions)
  • Meta description styles (question format vs. statement)
  • Heading structure (H1 phrasing)
  • Content length (short vs. long-form)
  • Schema markup additions

Tools

SearchPilot and SplitSignal are purpose-built SEO testing platforms. Larger sites can build custom solutions using Google Search Console data and statistical significance calculations.
