What Is Link Velocity?
Link velocity is the speed at which a website earns new backlinks over a given period. A steady, growing link velocity is a positive signal. Sudden, unnatural spikes — especially from low-quality domains — can trigger algorithmic scrutiny or manual review.
Natural vs. Unnatural Velocity
| Pattern | Signal |
|---|---|
| Steady monthly growth | Natural, healthy |
| Spike after publication of research/PR | Natural (news cycle) |
| Sudden spike from hundreds of low-DA domains | Suspicious — may indicate link scheme |
| Links that appear and disappear quickly | May indicate paid/rented links |
Monitoring Link Velocity
Use Ahrefs or Semrush to track "New referring domains" over time on a monthly chart. Compare your velocity to competitors' to understand what's typical in your niche. Watch for unexplained spikes in competitor profiles that may indicate black-hat tactics you can report via the spam report tool.
After a Negative SEO Attack
If a third party builds spammy links to your site (negative SEO), a sudden velocity spike of low-quality links may appear. Monitor regularly and disavow toxic links via Google Search Console before they accumulate to a level that triggers a penalty.
