What is JavaScript SEO?
JavaScript SEO is the practice of ensuring that websites built with JavaScript frameworks (React, Angular, Vue, Next.js, Nuxt, etc.) are properly crawlable and indexable by search engines.
The Core Problem
JS-rendered pages may return a mostly empty HTML file; content only appears after JavaScript executes. Googlebot can execute JS, but rendering is delayed (newly published content may take days to appear in the index) and resource-limited.
JavaScript SEO Solutions
| Approach | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| SSR | Server renders full HTML before sending to browser/crawler | News sites, blogs, content-heavy pages |
| SSG | HTML pre-built at deploy time | Marketing sites, docs |
| ISR | SSG with selective runtime regeneration | E-commerce with frequently updated inventory |
JS SEO Audit Checklist
- GSC URL Inspection → "Test live URL" → check page screenshot and "More info"
- Verify important content exists in the rendered HTML, not only in JS
- Confirm internal links are
<a href="...">tags, not JS-only click handlers - Ensure meta tags (title, canonical, robots) appear in server-rendered HTML
- Test Core Web Vitals — JS-heavy pages often have LCP and CLS issues
Technical decision
| Correct use | Critical content, links, canonical and robots signals must remain correct after rendering and should not depend on fragile user interaction. |
|---|---|
| Validation | Compare raw and rendered HTML with JavaScript enabled, test blocked resources and errors, then inspect the smartphone-rendered page in Search Console. |
