What Is Index Coverage?
Index coverage refers to how many of your site's pages have been successfully indexed by Google, and why others have been excluded. The Index Coverage report in Google Search Console shows the indexing status of all discovered URLs, categorised by status.
Coverage Status Categories
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Indexed | Page is in Google's index and eligible to rank |
| Excluded (not error) | Google chose not to index (noindex, canonical, duplicate) |
| Warning | Indexed but with issues (e.g., soft 404) |
| Error | Could not be indexed (404, server error, blocked by robots.txt) |
Common Exclusion Reasons
- Submitted URL marked noindex
- Duplicate without user-selected canonical
- Crawled but not indexed (quality too low)
- Blocked by robots.txt
- Page with redirect
Acting on Coverage Data
- Fix errors immediately (404s, server errors)
- Review "Crawled but not indexed" pages — improve content quality or consolidate
- Verify expected noindex pages are correctly excluded
- Use URL Inspection tool to request indexing after fixing issues
Technical decision
| Correct use | Read the current Page indexing report as grouped evidence, not a requirement that every known URL enter the index. |
|---|---|
| Validation | Compare submitted canonical URLs with indexed examples, inspect representative exclusions, and validate the live page before requesting another crawl. |
