What is a Content Pillar?
A content pillar (also called a pillar page or hub page) is a long-form, comprehensive piece of content that broadly covers a core topic and serves as the main authority page for that topic on a website. It is the centre of a content cluster (also called a topic cluster or hub-and-spoke model) — linking outward to more detailed, specific supporting articles (cluster content), and receiving links back from those articles.
Content Pillar vs Regular Blog Post
| Content Pillar | Supporting/Cluster Content | |
|---|---|---|
| Breadth | Broad topic coverage | Deep dive on one specific subtopic |
| Length | Usually 3,000–10,000+ words | Usually 1,000–3,000 words |
| Keyword target | Head term (high volume, competitive) | Long-tail, specific keywords |
| Internal links | Links out to many cluster pages | Links back to pillar + other cluster pages |
| Conversion goal | Often top-of-funnel; brand authority | Often mid-funnel; specific query solution |
How to Create a Content Pillar
- Choose a broad, strategically important topic that has many subtopics (e.g., "SEO", "Content Marketing", "Email Marketing")
- Research all the subtopics and questions that belong under this topic
- Write a comprehensive overview page that covers each subtopic at a summary level with links to deeper cluster articles
- Ensure the pillar page has a strong title, unique insights, and is designed to be the definitive resource on the topic
- Create or link to cluster content for each major subtopic
- Build external links to the pillar page — it is your highest-priority link target for the topic
