Data and metrics

What is the difference between clicks and impressions?

Impressions measure opportunities to be seen in Google Search. Clicks measure the times a user selected a result that led outside Google to your site.

Checked against Google Search Console Help · October 2026

Short answer

An impression can be recorded without a visit. A click requires the user to choose a result that leads to your site. Divide clicks by impressions and multiply by 100 to calculate CTR.

Google documents the exact counting rules in its metrics guide ↗ because result types can behave differently.

Two metrics answer two different questions

Read them together, but do not treat one as a substitute for the other.

01Measures visibility

Impression

Was a link to this Search Console property shown or potentially seen in an eligible Google result?

02Measures visits from Search

Click

Did a user choose a result and leave Google for a page in this property?

CTR

From impressions to CTR

CTR describes the share of recorded impressions that produced recorded clicks. It does not explain why users clicked or did not click.

CTR = clicks ÷ impressions × 100320 ÷ 10,000 × 100 = 3.2%

Read the movement before choosing an action

Each combination is a starting hypothesis, not proof of a cause. Segment by query, page, country and device before changing content.

Impressions ↑ · Clicks ↑

Visibility and captured demand grew.

Find the queries and pages responsible; protect what is working.

Impressions ↑ · Clicks ↔/↓

More visibility did not create proportional traffic.

Check query mix, position, title/snippet and the search-results layout.

Impressions ↓ · Clicks ↔

Visibility narrowed while traffic held.

See whether low-value queries disappeared before treating it as a loss.

Impressions ↓ · Clicks ↓

Demand, visibility or search availability may have fallen.

Split the change by page and query; then inspect indexing and data anomalies.

DATA QUALITY

Why chart and table totals may not match

The chart is normally aggregated by property, while a table grouped by page can count each URL separately. Anonymized queries and table row limits can also leave the visible rows below the chart total. Compare like with like: same property, search type, dates, filters and aggregation.

How these terms relate

Search impressions, GSC impressions and Google search impressions refer to visibility recorded by Search Console. The phrase “click impression” is ambiguous: use “click” for the visit and “impression” for the opportunity to be seen.

A reliable comparison checklist

Same scope

Keep property, search type, country, device and filters identical.

Complete periods

Compare equal, finished periods and note preliminary dotted data.

Absolute values first

Calculate changes in clicks and impressions before interpreting CTR.

One segment at a time

Use Queries and Pages to locate the contribution instead of guessing from totals.
