What privacy blur does
Privacy blur hides business figures on screen so you can share a screen, record a video or take a screenshot without exposing clicks, impressions and other numbers. It blurs the numbers and leaves labels, such as query and page names, readable, so a viewer can still follow what you are doing.
It is a display setting only. The data, the reports and the exports are unchanged.
Where to switch it on
The “Privacy blur” switch is in the left sidebar, together with Dark mode and Beginner mode: on My Sites, inside every property, and on the account and subscription pages. Turn it on before you open the screen you want to share, because the page applies it when it renders.
The setting is remembered in your browser. It applies on this device and browser only; a teammate, another browser or another computer has its own switch.
What gets blurred
| Area | Effect |
|---|---|
| Report tables (Queries, rankings, rank changes and similar) | number cells are blurred; the first column with names stays readable |
| Summary figures and brand summary | key figures and small captions are blurred |
| Query Analysis | key figures, query shapes and evidence numbers are blurred |
| Google Analytics, channels and blended reports | key figures and table numbers are blurred |
| Pages report | the whole report area is blurred |
Blurred cells cannot be selected with the mouse.
What it does not do
- It is not security. The numbers are still in the page; the blur is a visual filter. Do not rely on it to hide data from someone who has access to your browser.
- It does not cover every view. Check the specific report before you share it; for example, the Countries report has no blur rule.
- Exports are not changed. CSV and copied tables contain real values, so do not attach them to a recording you intend to share.
- Names are not hidden. Query text, page URLs and property names stay readable.
A safe way to share a screen
- Switch on Privacy blur in the sidebar.
- Open the report you will show and look at it: numbers should be blurred.
- Hide what the blur does not hide: property names, query text or URLs that are confidential.
- Share the screen, and switch the setting off afterwards if you want normal numbers back.
If something looks wrong
| Symptom | Cause and fix |
|---|---|
| Numbers are not blurred on one report | that report has no blur rule; do not share it, or hide it another way |
| Blur is gone in another browser | the setting is stored per browser; switch it on there too |
| Blur does not appear after switching | reload the page; the report applies the setting when it renders |
Privacy blur, answered
Does the blur change my data or exports?
No. It is a display filter; exports contain the real values.
Does a teammate see my blur setting?
No. It is stored in your own browser.
Can I use it as protection against someone else seeing my numbers?
No. It is meant for screen sharing, not for access control.
