Competitive Analysis
๐ต๏ธ
Alex puts on a trench coat
"Competitive analysis in SEO is like espionage โ but completely legal. We study everything our rivals do and take the best parts. Zero guilt."
โ ๏ธ Important: SEO competitors โ business competitors. Your SEO competitor is whoever ranks for your target keywords. That could be Wikipedia, a blog, or a marketplace.
Step 1 โ Find Your SEO Competitors
Google your main keywords. Who consistently appears in the top 10? Those are your SEO competitors. Tools help too: Semrush โ "Organic Competitors", Ahrefs โ "Competing Domains".
Step 2 โ Analyze Their Content
Look at their top pages: what format (article/video/tool)? How in-depth is the material? How are headings structured? This shows what Google expects from pages on this topic.
Competitor analysis checklist:
โ Top 10 pages by organic traffic
โ Content structure (H1-H3)
โ Content length
โ Content type (guide/list/calculator)
โ Backlink profile
โ Page speed

Step 3 โ Analyze Backlinks
Backlinks are one of Google's most important ranking factors. See who links to your competitors โ those are potential link sources for you too.
Step 4 โ Find the Gaps
Gap analysis: which keywords bring traffic to competitors but not to you? Those are your quick wins. In Semrush it's "Keyword Gap", in Ahrefs โ "Content Gap".

Alex finds gold
"Our competitor gets 5,000 visits/month for 'how to choose a CRM' and we don't have that page. We create it. That's the whole secret of competitive analysis."
๐ก Core principle: you don't need to be original โ you need to be better. Find what competitors do, do it with higher quality, add unique value.
๐ฎ Test yourself: put the analysis steps in the correct order!
