ChatGPT apps and plugins for marketing data: permissions, data use and what to check

Lists of “best ChatGPT plugins for marketing” rank products. This guide instead sets out what OpenAI documents about apps and plugins: the permission settings, what a connected app can see, how training use depends on your plan, and what to check before you connect anything.

Start with the words OpenAI uses now

Marketing lists still say “ChatGPT plugins”. In OpenAI’s current Help Center an app connects ChatGPT to an external service and can read information or take supported actions, while a plugin packages capabilities into a workflow and can include apps, skills or both. Installing a plugin does not bypass an app’s authorization or workspace permissions (Connected apps in ChatGPT). So the question for any marketing tool is not “is it a plugin?” but “what can it read, what can it change, and who sees the data?”

What the permission settings do and do not do

  • Always ask: ChatGPT asks before reading app information or making changes.
  • Allow read actions: it reads without asking and asks before making changes.
  • Allow low-risk actions: low-risk actions are approved automatically; higher-risk ones may need confirmation or be denied.
  • Allow all actions: no extra prompts, elevated risk, and not offered by the standard account-wide and workspace-wide selectors (Managing app permissions).

These settings only control when ChatGPT asks. They do not grant access, and changing one does not disconnect an app; to remove access you disconnect the account or ask an administrator to disable the app. OpenAI lists sending an email or message, editing or deleting a record, changing sharing settings and making a purchase among the actions that may need review.

What the app can see, and what happens to it

An enabled app may access context from your conversations and, when Memory is on, relevant memories, plus basic information such as IP address, device or browser type, language and approximate location. Data shared with an app follows that app’s own terms and privacy policy (Connected apps in ChatGPT).

Training depends on the plan. For Business, Enterprise and Edu, information accessed from connectors is not used to train models by default. For Free, Plus, Go and Pro it may be, if “Improve the model for everyone” is on. For marketing data that means: on a personal plan, check that setting before you connect a tool that exposes client numbers.

Match the job to the permission

JobSetting to start withWhy
Reading Search Console or analytics numbersAllow read actionsreading is the whole job; changes should still ask
Drafting and posting to a social or email toolAlways asksending and posting are on OpenAI’s list of actions that may need review
Anything that can spend moneyAlways askpurchases are on the same list; never leave it on Allow all
A one-off client analysisAlways ask, then disconnect afterwardsdisconnecting is what removes access

This table is our recommendation, not an OpenAI default. Event-triggered tasks follow the same rules: a task can use only the connected account’s allowed information and pauses when an action needs approval.

A pre-connect checklist

  1. Whose numbers are they? Your own account (measured) or the vendor’s estimates (modelled)? Label them in the output.
  2. What can it change? List the write actions before you connect and decide which stay on Always ask.
  3. What does sign-in grant? Read the provider’s authorization screen; the app can reach only what you grant there.
  4. Where does the data go? Read the app’s terms and your plan’s training setting.
  5. What are the limits? App use may count toward plan limits and the provider’s own limits.
  6. Who can say no? Keep a person able to deny an action, as the MCP guidance recommends (MCP tools).

ChatGPT apps for marketing, answered

Does “Allow read actions” stop ChatGPT from changing things?

It still asks before making changes. It does not limit what the connected account itself is allowed to do, so keep the provider-side scope read-only too.

Does changing a permission revoke an app’s access?

No. Disconnect the account, or ask an administrator to disable the app.

Is my client data used for training?

Not by default on Business, Enterprise and Edu; on Free, Plus, Go and Pro it may be if the setting is on.
