Bing beside Google

The Bing group shows Bing Webmaster Tools data for a property next to its Google data: queries, pages and crawl health. Bing is a separate search engine with its own index, so its numbers answer a different question from Search Console and do not add to them. The reports are read-only and marked Beta.

Connecting with an API key

  1. Get a Bing Webmaster Tools API key. Sign in to Bing Webmaster Tools, add and verify the site, choose Settings at the top right, open API Access, accept the terms and click Generate API Key (Microsoft documentation). Only one key can be generated per user, and it works for all your verified sites. Microsoft recommends OAuth 2.0 for applications; the workspace uses the key method.
  2. Save it in the workspace. The key is stored encrypted, can be tested, replaced or deleted, and is never shown in error messages.
  3. Make sure the site is in that Bing account. Only properties that exist in Bing and in your connected Search Console are offered for reports.

Without a key, Bing pages ask you to add one.

The four reports

ReportWhat it shows
Bing Overviewtraffic and ranking trend, top queries and pages, link counts, the URL submission quota, crawl health and sitemaps
Bing Queriesqueries with clicks, impressions and position from Bing
Bing Pagespages with the same metrics
Crawl Issuesproblems Bing met while crawling the site

The overview supports 7, 28, 90 and 180 days and compares each period with the one before it.

How crawl health is calculated

  • Activity totals (pages crawled, pages blocked by robots.txt, crawl errors including 4xx and 5xx) add up Bing’s daily crawl records over the whole available history, about six months. They do not follow the period you chose.
  • Pages in index and inbound links are point-in-time values from the newest day.

Read crawl errors as a list to investigate, not as a score. A robots.txt block you set on purpose is not a problem; see IndexNow for telling Bing about changes.

What to keep in mind

  • Different engine, different numbers. Do not add Bing clicks to Google clicks or expect the same positions.
  • Beta. Fields and layout can change.
  • Key safety. Treat the API key like a password. If it may be compromised, delete it in Bing Webmaster Tools and generate a new one: every application using the old key stops working until updated.

Bing reports, answered

Does the workspace change anything in Bing?

No. It only reads.

Why is a property missing from the Bing list?

It must exist both in Bing and in your connected Search Console.

Why do crawl totals ignore my period?

They sum the daily crawl records Bing provides for about six months.
